1. What is a computer? Discuss the process of processing data to information.

A computer is a machine used for many purposes. By the use of computer, we can perform
calculations, store informations, retrieve data, and process informations. The computer will only do
what it is programmed to do.

In processing data to information, we have three important terms to follow: the input, the processing,
and the output.

Firstly, we have to gather all the data that we need and this will become our input. Next, we will
process all the data that we have gathered. We can either encode them or record them. Lastly, we
have the output. All the data gathered and processed will result to information. We can show the
output or the information on screen, hardcopy, diskette, and other Visual Display Units.

2. What are the advantages of computer method of data processing over manual and mechanical
methods of data processing?

The computer method is way better than manual and mechanical method because it requires less
effort and it is not time consuming. Also, errors can be easily corrected in computer method of data
processing.

3. Explain four characteristics of computer.

a. Speed - The computer works with much higher speed compared to human. It can process millions
of instructions per second.

b. Accuracy - The computer's accuracy is very high. It can perform calculations with 100% accuracy.
Errors may occur due to human errors or technical errors.

c. Automatic - The computer performs all the tasks automatically without manual intervention. It can
run automatically each time it is opened.

d. Storage - It has both internal and external storage facilities for holding data and instructions. It also
has secondary storages that are removable devices such as CDs, pen drives, etc., which are also used
to store data.

4. Fill in the empty shapes of the schematic diagram of a computing system and described each of the
components.

Computing
Hardware Software Users Environment
a. Hardware - physical parts of a computer such as the case, CPU, mouse, keyboard etc.

b. Software - set of instructions, data, or programs that tell the computer what to do.

c. Users - a person who uses the computer.

d. Computing Environment - collection of computers/machines, software, and networks which are used
to process and exchange information to solve various types of computing problems.
