Juan Guillermo was born in Necoclí, a town in the department of Antioquia that was ravaged by

violence in the 1990s. When he was only four years old, he lost his father to violence.

A few years later, his mother, Marcela Bello, enrolled him in a soccer school, and in order to pay
the monthly fees, she went to work in Apartadó, leaving the little boy with his aunt and uncle. On
weekends she returned to Necoclí to be with her son and finish high school in the evenings.

He started with Club Atlético Urabá and then played for Rionegro in Colombia's Primera B, and
after his good performance he signed with Deportivo Independiente Medellín at the age of 20. In
this Colombian Primera A team he made his debut on September 14, 2009 against Boyacá Chicó, a
match in which he scored his first goal as a professional.
