(3) A tapered transition having a length aot ess than Athoe times the offset between the adjacent surfaces of butting sections as shown in Fig. UW-I31 sketches (j) ‘and (k) shall be provided at joints between formed heads and shells that differ in thickness by more than one-fourth the thickness ofthe thinner section or by more than in. {G mm), whichever is less. Whoa a taper is required on any formed head thicker than the shell and intended for ‘uit ded attachment (Fig. UW-13.1 sketches (I) and (im), the skint shall be Jong enough so thatthe required lengths of taper does not extend beyond the tangent line. ‘When the transition is formed by removing material from the thicker section, the minimum thickness of that section, after the material is removed, shall nt be less than that ‘required by UG-23(c). When the transition is formed by adding ational weld metal beyond what would otherwise be the edge af the weld, such additional weld metal buildup shal be subject othe requirements of UW-42. The cemter- line misalignment between shell and head shall be no ‘reater than one-half the difference between the acta shell and head thickness, a illustrated in Fig, UW-13.1 sketches Gj), 2), (), and (a), (4) Shells and heads may be atached to shells or reads using a butt weld with ane pate offet as shown in Fig. UW-131 sketch (i). The weld bead may be deposited ‘onthe inside of the vessel only when the weld is accessible for inspection after the vessel is completed. The offet shallbe smooth and symmetrical and shall not be machined ‘or otherwise reduced in thickness. There sll bea uniform force fit withthe mating section atthe root of the weld. ‘Should the offset contain a longitudinal jin the folowing shall apply: (a) The longitudinal weld within the area of the ‘offset shall be ground substantially flush with the parent metal prior to the offsetting operation, (b) The longitudinal weld from the edge of the plate through the offset shall be examined by the magnetic particle method ater the offieting operation. Cracks and ‘raclike defects are unacceptable and shall be repaired or removed. (c) Asan acceptable altemative to magnetic pa le examination or when magnetic particle methods are ot feasible because of the nonmagnetic character of the weld deposit, a liguid penetrant method shall be used. Cracks and crackle defects are unacceptable and shall be repaired or removed. (5) Non-butt wehled boling anges shall be atached to formed heads as illustrated in Fig. 1-6 m2 (M1) Imermediate heads, without limit to thickness, of the type shown in Fig. UW-L3.1 sketch (6) may be used forall types of vessels provided thatthe outside diameter ofthe head skit isa close fit inside the overlapping ends of the adjacent length of exlinder.
