MME 9651 – Additive Manufacturing

Course Project

You will be working on the course project in groups of six students. The main goal of the project
is to design and evaluate an industrial part for additive manufacturing. The part should be designed
at a reasonable scale, and it must be functional and have value or an intended purpose in industry.
The project can belong to one of the following two directions:
1. Design for Additive Manufacturing, where you will develop a 3D model for an industrial
part. Then, you will optimize the part design to be suitable for additive manufacturing using
topology optimization techniques. You will also prepare the topology optimized design for
manufacturing by generating the STL file, slicing the part, selecting the material, and
identifying the process settings.
2. Prototyping, where you will develop a prototype of any part that is being mass-produced
in industry. Then, you will scale down the part and identify the main criteria of prototyping.
You will also perform full analysis on the prototype including material selection, process
selection, process settings, cost analysis, inspection procedures, and part verification.
You should start networking to build your group, then contacting your colleagues to brainstorm
ideas for the project. You should have the following information before September 28, 2021.
