Professional Development Plan

What are your goals for the next 6 months?

My goal in the next 6 months is to prepare to pass the National Council Licensure
Examination (NCLEX), which is important for becoming a nurse. My other goal is to find a job
in a hospital mean while I study for my NCLEX, to get my way in once I become a RN.
How do you plan to achieve your goals for the next 6 months?
To achieve my goals in the next 6 months, I’m focusing first on passing the NCLEX, I
am aware that most of my free time will be for reading and practice a lot of questions. In the
meantime, I will also arrange my resume with all the necessary details and certifications and look
for a job in a hospital as a patient transport or patient clerk, so once I get my license be already
working in the hospital and probably have more connection in the unit, I want to start working an
RN.
What are your goals for the next 3 years? How do you plan to achieve your goals for the
next 3 years?
For the next three years, I must ensure that I am already working as an RN. I will apply to
every hospital possible to get better chances to get employed, even though Jackson West Medical
Center is my first option. I am planning to work at the med-surge floor unit to get the most
knowledge possible for at least 1 year, or while I finish my BSN. In order to get my BSN, I must
apply to a BSN program at Miami Dade College which is where I want to graduate. After
attaining my BSN, I will find a suitable position as a Wound care Nurse or ICU attendant. In
order to become WOCN I must complete a course and have at least one year of RN clinical
experience.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself in the next 10 years, already with my MSN in nursing informatics or as a
wound care nurse, which is until now what I would really like to be doing as a nurse.

Which professional organizations do you belong to? Do you presently belong to an

organization that is related to your future nursing career?
The professional organization related to nursing that I do belong to is American Nurses
Association (ANA). ANA is one of the largest organizations in the country. This organization
focuses on evolving the nursing profession by fostering high standards of practice, promoting
ethical work environments, bolstering health and wellness, and advocating for health care issues
that affect nurses and the public.
What are the Standards and Scope of Practice of the Nurses in your future career?
The standards and scope of practice for a Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence
Nurse (CWOCN) is to promote excellence in professional practice, quality care, and improved
patient outcomes in WOC specialty practice. It can be used to articulate the value of WOC
nurses to administrators, legislators, payers, patients, and others. The scope of WOC nursing
practice includes a description of the specialty, the history and evolution of WOC nursing,
characteristics of WOC nursing practice, describes various WOC nurse roles, populations served,
practice settings, care coordination, and collaboration. (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence
Nursing, 2018).
What are the requirements to be certified in your future career?
The requirements needed to become certified as WOCN are the following:
- RN with a Baccalaureate Degree or higher.
- One year of RN clinical nursing experience following RN licensure.
- Current clinical nursing experience within 5 years prior to application to a WOC Nursing
Education Program.
- Documentation of currency of clinical nursing experience within last 5 years: current,
active practice, completion of a nurse refresher course, or a clinical performance
examination.
How do you plan to achieve the certification?
In order to get my WOCN certification, I will have to work first as an RN for at least 1
year, while I finish the BSN degree, after that I can apply to any program to get my certification.
This certification takes around 3-4 months, and it must have at least 120 clinical hours of
experience.
Which professional competencies do you hold? Such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.?
3

I’m currently holding a Basic life support (BLS), which is essential to have in order to
work in any area of the hospital. Once working in the hospital, I’m also planning to attain the
ACLS since it is important if I want to be in the ICU unit.
Which professional competencies do you plan to obtain in the next 6 months?
I will do my best to obtain the skills needed in nursing such as safe and quality nursing
care, communication, collaboration and teamwork, health education, legal responsibility, ethic-
moral responsibility, and evidence-based practice.
Have you participated in a professional activity? If so, what have you done?

I haven’t had the opportunity to participate in a professional activity at this time.
