Professional athletes receive too much money?

The athletes who just represented Ecuador at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, won three

medals and four Olympic diplomas. But, the athletes don’t receive the money they deserve.

First of all, I think that the delegations of the different disciplines do not receive the resources

they need. Richard Carapaz, the cyclist, in an interview he made strong statements. He said

that they didn’t have the medical personnel to treat the athletes after their participation. He

mentioned that they didn't even have uniforms and facemasks to use during the event. Neisi

Dajomes, the weightlifter, mentioned that in several international events the financial

resources they receive are limited. From my point of view, if she hadn't won the gold medal,

nobody would have helped her financially. With these testimonials, clearly their effort is not

properly rewarded.

On the other hand, soccer is the sport with millionaire contracts from sponsors. Some people

think that soccer players are the only athletes with good salaries in the country. Which seems

to me to be very unfair, because they don’t even get good results. I strongly believe that the

ministry of sport must invest equally in all sports. Athletes should receive a salary and a place

to live. They should even receive health insurance and education scholarships.

To sum up, the economic situation of sport in Ecuador is unfair to its representatives. It is

unfortunate to hear the stories of young athletes who are only just starting their training. Even

those who are retired and have won medals should receive some recognition, for instance,

Jefferson Perez. Therefore, athletes in Ecuador do not receive the money that rewards their

achievements. Sport authorities should follow the example of other countries and pay athletes

what they deserve. I believe that Ecuador has potential in several disciplines, they just need to

recognize the abilities of their athletes and support them.
