Adolescent Suicide Increases during Pandemic Times

The rate of suicide attempts has increased since the beginning of the pandemic in

Ecuador. Teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 have attempted to take their own

lives using a variety of methods. Such as the use of psychotropic drugs, hanging and

even incineration.

The main reason of these sad situation is, parents are working all day. They don't really

put attention, if their behavior have changed.

Experts say that the health crisis during 2020, has been a trigger for adolescents to

present depression. Due to the fact, they stay at home by themselves all day.

At the same time, according to police reports, family violence is one of the reasons why

teens decide to take their own lives.

The data are alarming, for these reasons, parents should be attentive to the signals

transmitted by their children. When it is possible, do not leave them alone at home. Try

to have a talk about how they feel and do not correct them with violence.
