Written Dance Proposal

“Girl Like Me”

The concept of my piece will be on the trials and tribulations of being a black girl/woman

in our society. I want to primarily focus on the mental abuse that is not seen in black girls in our

world today. I want to emphasize the importance of mental health while also focusing on realistic

ideas of how it feels to be a black woman. As a black woman, we are continuously being

overlooked and it causes many thoughts, like self doubt. There is the stereotype that black

women are always angry and never satisfied but no one really asks why that may be the cause

of this. Black women are the root of society and many things that are essential to our daily lives

are created by a black women, yet we never get the credit or flowers that we deserve. There is

a lot that isn’t said about a black woman’s mental health and shows to others that we must be

strong for our loved ones so that we are not seen as weak. I hope to showcase this idea in

making the movements that bring out feelings and not just motions so there will have to be a

little acting involved while doing the movements. As of right now, I am not completely sure of

how I will use certain movements that will enhance my piece but I know that I do not want to

stick to what is comfortable or go with what is always seen in a performance. I want to use this

opportunity to not only push my choreographic process but also make the piece a challenge for

the dancer or dancers. As far as casting, I am playing it by the book based on auditions and

would like to cast a soloist or a trio.
