THIRD REVIEW PRQ 3232 II/2021

1. A heavy oil, whose viscosity is 3.45 x 10-4 m2sec-1, is at rest in a large vertical tube of 0.7
cm radius. Due to the effect of gravity, the fluid begins to pour from the bottom of the tube.
Graph the fluid velocities as a function of time, within 15 seconds of starting the process.
2. Hot gases from the combustion of a furnace flow through a square chimney made of
concrete (k=1.4 W/mºC). The flow section of the chimney is 20 cm x 20 cm and the wall
thickness is 20 cm. The temperature of the flue gases is 300ºC with a convective coefficient
of 70 W/m2 ºC. The chimney loses heat from its outer surface to the ambient air that is at
20ºC with a convective coefficient of 21 W/m2ºC. Applying finite differences with ∆x=∆y=10
cm, determine the temperatures in the chimney section.

NOTE: THE EXAM MUST BE COMPLETED AT 18:00... YOU WILL THEN HAVE 15 MINUTES
