CHAPTER 10 – Non-Linear Programming | Module D – Nonlinear Programming
Solution Techniques

SOAL 1
Ardelia crafts knitting bags that she sells at craft fairs. She is considering mass
production of her bags for sale in stores. She estimates that the initial investment in
plant and equipment will cost $25,000, while labor, raw materials, packaging, and
shipping will cost about $10 per bag. She determined that the sales volume of her bag
would depend on the price according to the following linear equation.
v = 4,000 - 80p
Construct a non-linear programming profit function for Ardelia and determine the price
that will maximize profit, optimal sales volume, and maximum profit per month!

SOAL 2
A leading wood company “Vintage Woods” will produce two types of desks: study (𝑋1)

and work (𝑋2) models. Based on the data we have, the profit generated by a dozen of the

study desk follows the $25-0,8𝑋1 equation while the work desk model follows the

$30-1,2𝑋2 equation. With the current number of workers, it takes 1 hour to produce a

dozen study desks and 2 hours to produce a work desk model. The total working hours
in a day is 40 hours, and all of them must be used to make both types of desks. You are
asked by Vintage Woods to determine the optimal solution for this case using the
substitution method or Langrangian method.

SOAL 3
The total production of a company is modeled using the Cobb-Douglas function as
follows:
3/4 1/4
F(L, K) = 100𝐿 𝐾 (in unit)
where L is the amount of labor and K is the amount of capital. The labor cost is $200 and
the capital cost is $250. The total available funds are $50,000.
Question:
a. Determine the company's maximum level of production.

b. If an additional $20,000 is allocated on capital goods, How many more units can be
manufactured?

SOAL 4
PLOW, bottled beverage manufacturers, has three excellent products, namely α, β, and γ.
As Operations Manager of PLOW, Mr. Jason has succeeded in modeling the profit
function (in millions Rupiah) of the three products as follows:
3/2α²+ β²+ γ² + 4αβ+ 2αγ+βγ- 32α- 238 - 19γ+ 140
In producing each product, α, β, and γ, it takes 1, 2, and 1 hour respectively in processing
time for each pack with a total working hour of 15 hours a day.
Question:
a. Using the Lagrange method, determine how many packs of each product PLOW should
produce. Also, what is the value of the objective function?
b. What is the meaning of the obtained Lagrange multiplier value?

SOAL 5
After watching the Global Citizen Life concert, Billie imagined designing an autopilot hot
air balloon that could be the venue for her virtual concerts. However, Billie needs to
consider the performance in terms of how high it can reach and the weight of the
equipment that can be carried (W) by the hot air balloon. If the achievable height
depends on the volume of the hot air balloon (V), then the performance of the hot air
balloon can be expressed as follows:
2 2
P(VW) = 100𝑉 - 0,3𝑉 + 80𝑊 - 0,2𝑊 ,
where V and W are estimated to cost $2 and $4 per unit, respectively (units have been
converted to units for ease of calculation). To ensure that the performance between the
possible height and the weight that can be carried remains balanced, Billie included a
criterion of the volume that can be achieved should be at 80% of the weight that it can
carry. If Billie has a budget of $1,040 to spend, determine the specifications of the hot air
balloon that must be made regarding V and W so that maximum performance? (Hint:
Use the suitable method for this case)
