Rationale for the SCICA
‘The Semistructured Clinical Interview for Chil-
dren and Adolescents (SCICA) is a standardized
clinical interview for ages 6-18, We designed the
SCICA as a component of the Achenbach System
of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA). This
is the second-edition of our Manual for the
‘Semistructured Clinical Interview for Children and
Adolescents (MeConaughy & Achenbach, 1994).
It describes the features and development of the
interview protocol and rating forms, plus a second
edition version of the scoring profile. The SCICA.
Protocol outlines questions and tasks for interview-
ing children and adolescents ages 6 to 18. (Forbrev-
ity, we will use “children” to include ages 6 to 18.)
‘The SCICA Observation and Self-Report Forms
list items for rating observations of children’s be-
havior, affect, and interaction style, plus children’s
own reports oftheir problems during the interview.
‘The SCICA Profile for Ages 6-18 (SCICA Pro-
file/6-18) displays item scores, syndrome scale
scores, and broader scale scores for agaregating in-
terviewers’ ratings of observations and children’s
self-reported problems.
‘The versions of the SCICA Protocol and SCICA
Observation and Self-Report Forms described in
this Manual ate essentially the same as the 1994
versions, except for minor changes in wording of
some items and instructions. The SCICA Profile/
6-18 is an entirely new version that provides sepa-
rate scale scores for ages 6-11 and 12-18. The pre-
vious 1994 SCICA Profile provided scale scores
only for ages 6-12. To develop syndrome scales
for the SCICA Profile/6-18, we conducted new
factor analyses of item scores for separate samples
of clinically referred children ages 6-11 and 12-
18, We also developed new scales that are consis-
tent with diagnostic categories defined in the Ameri-
can Psychiatric Association's (1994) Diagnostic and
‘Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edi-
tion (DSM-IV). The SCICA Profile/6-18 can be
hhand-scored or computer-scored. With the 2001
SCICA computer program, users can obtain scores
on the SCICA Profile/6-18 from data previously
entered with the 1994 SCICA computer program.
STRUCTURE OF THIS MANUAL
‘This Manual describes the 2001 version of the
SCICA for ages 6 to 18. In tis chapter, we discuss
cour rationale for developing the SCICA within the
context ofa multiaxial assessment model. Chapter2
covers administration of the SCICA Protocol and
describes techniques for semistructured clinical in-
terviewing of children. Chapter 3 teaches the scor-
ing procedures for the SCICA Observation and Self-
Report Forms. Chapter 4 describes the hand-scored
version of the SCICA Profile/6-18 syndrome scales
and broader scales for ages 6-11 and 12-18, while
‘Chapter 5 describes the DSM-oriented scales. Chap-
ter 6 presents the computer-scored version of the
‘CICA Profile/6-18, which displays the same scales
as are described in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 6 also
describes our videotape training procedures for the
SCICA. In Chapter 7, we provide guidelines and
illustrations of practical applications of the SCICA
in diverse settings, such as mental health, school, and
forensic contexts, as well as research applications.

present cases in Chapter 8 in which the SCICA was
‘combined with other assessment procedures, includ
ing parent and teacher reports, cognitive and achieve-
‘mentttesting, and other forms of direct assessment of

‘The remaining chapters present technical details
of our research to develop the SCICA rating forms
and scoring profile. In Chapter 9, we describe the
