APPENDIX A INSTRUCTIONS FOR SCORING THE SCICA OBSERVATION AND SELF-REPORT FORMS AND HAND-SCORED SCICA PROFILE/6-18 Following administration of the SCICA, the in- terviewer (or a videotape rater) scores the child on the SCICA Observation and Self-Report Forms. ‘The Observation Form contains items that describe behavioral or emotional problems observed dur- ing the interview. The SelfReport Form contains items describing problems reported by the child. Itis unnecessary to make a rigorous distinction be- tween what constitutes a child’s self-report versus an observation by the interviewer. Some charac- teristics qualify for scores on both forms. For ex- ample, if a child reported difficulties concentrat- ing or paying attention in school, you may score the self-report item 144. Reports being unable to concentrate or pay attention for long. Ifthe child also exhibited problems concentrating or paying attention on certain tasks or topics during the in- terview. you could also score the observation item 31. Doesn't concentrate or pay attention for long on tasks, questions, topics. Examples of other items. ‘on the Observation Form that may overlap with specific problems scored on the Self-Report Form including: 17. Can't get mind off certain thoughts; obsessions (Self-Report item 187); 32. Doesn't sit still, restless, or hyperactive (Self-Report item 145); 83. Unhappy, ‘sad or depressed (Self-Report item 147) SCORING THE SCICA OBSERVATION FORM. Items on Pages | and 2 of the SCICA Observa- tion Form describe aspects of the child’s behavior, affect, and interaction style observed during the interview. Each observation item is scored on a 4- point scale according to the following instructions: For each item that describes the child’s be- havior during the interview, circl 0 = no occurrence; 1 2-= definite occurrence with mild to moder- ate intensity and less than 3 minutes dura- tion; ery slight or ambiguous occurrence; 3 = definite occurrence with severe inten- sity or 3 or more minutes duration. Your notes on the SCICA Protocol provide a basis for remembering the observations to be scored. Items should be scored to reflect actual ob- servations made during the interview. Score only the item that most specifically describes a particu- ler observation. For example, several observation items deseribe attention problems or hyperactiv- ity, such as 31. Doesn't concentrate or pay atten- tion for long on tasks, questions, or topics; 32, Doesn't sit still, restless, or hyperactive; 33. Basily distracted by external stimuli; 38. Fidg- ets; 40, Frequently off task; 53. Lapses in atten- tion; 64. Needs repetition of instructions or ques- tions; and 89. Stares blankly. Ifa child exhibits any such problems during the SCICA, score the one item that best fits the actual behavior observed. You may score more than one item only if the child exhibits more than one different kind of problem, such as difficulty concentrating at certain times, being off-task at other times, and being restless throughout the interview.
