The tank must be cleaned with a rotating water jet and exposed to high water pressure in the
first stage. It also contains many material types and washing procedures. Second, the level of
water in the tank should be kept to a minimum when washing by constantly pumping away slops
and encouraging flow to the suction point (positive list and trim). If this condition is not satisfied,
the cleaning technique must be repeated three times, each time thoroughly stripping the tank.
Third, substances with a viscosity of 50 mPas or greater at 20 °C must be washed in hot water
(at least 60 °C) unless their properties make washing difficult. Finally, the cycle count of the
cleaning machine must not be less than the value in table 6-1. The duration between two
identical tank cleaning machine orientations (rotation through 360°) is referred to as a cleaning
machine cycle. The final point is that after washing, tank cleaning equipment must be
maintained running long enough to flush the pipeline, pump, and filter, and discharge to shore
receiving facilities must continue until the tank is empty.
