Gun Control

This paper supports increasing scrutiny on the sale and use of guns as it will curb gun

related deaths, lower the circulation of assault weapons, and reduce incidences of domestic

abuse.

Generally, increased gun control is associated with fewer gun deaths because gun laws

make it difficult for dubious individuals to get their hands on weapons. Currently, despite formal

background checks, over counter sales of guns make it easier for such individuals to circumvent

any form of scrutiny on gun laws. Making guns less accessible to the public will help rectify this

issue as it makes it difficult for such individuals to buy weapons.

Even though assault weapons are responsible for only a minority of gun deaths in the US,

they are extensively used for mass murders and other terrorist activities. In the year 2017, only

11 mass shooting incidents resulted in 117 civilian casualties (Hemenway, and Nelson). Thus, by

reducing the circulation of such weapons to the public, the US government can hamper the

effects of terrorist activities.

Thirdly, both domestic abuse and stalking tend to become more violent when the

perpetrator is armed. In fact, research shows that women, in particular, are 500% more likely to

die from a domestic dispute if their partner has access to a gun (Mayors against Illegal Guns).

Therefore, increasing restrictions on guns can help save demographic groups which are being

victimized under the current laws.

On the contrary, one possible drawback of increased gun control is that it violates the

second amendment right of citizens to be able to bear arms. This is an impeachment of individual

freedom and liberty, owing to which there is a lot of animosity amongst the public on the gun

debate. However, one could argue that the second amendment does not justify infinite right to

own guns, meaning that a reasonable level of restrictions on gun ownership are justified.
