Reflection Essay 1

In this genre analysis essay, I learned a lot about myself as a writer. As a writer, seeing

how much preparation you have to do can be tiresome and frustration. Up to this moment, I had

never written a genre analysis essay. However, in the brainstorming process, the writing process

was easier to me because I had prepared. In my mind, mistakes were caught faster which before

my brain would have not caught those mistakes. For example, my mind caught run-ons,

punctuation errors, and fragments. I also got help from Mrs. McCann and the ACE center to

identify them and correct them.

To begin with, when as the writing process, my mind struggled in many aspects such as

finding a good topic and creating my intro. Choosing the topic was the most challenging because

I could not find anything that interested me. At last, I remembered I should do something on the

area of sports since I know so much about it. My topic was then on the NBA and its Twitter

community using the Venn diagram. At this point, there was thoughts in my head that it was

going to be smooth sailing, but it was hard to think of a good hook to capture my audience. I

took about three days to come up with a strong hook and I actually got a lot of support from my

friends. The ACE center also told me to always remember to tie in my community with my

reasons which had not been done in the essay.

This essay can also be applied to other courses such as history. In history, with the Black

Lives Matter Movement, there are lessons about segregation and how this movement has

evolved. However, in chemistry, this could not be applicable because the movement has nothing

to do with chemistry. For example, if you are learning about significant digits in chemistry, there

would be no connection with the Black Lives Matter Movement.

In the future, my essays will be even prepared more in hand and attending the ACE

writing center again will certainly be a necessity. From learning from my peers and instructor’s

learning, my essays always need to circle back to my topic and not go off topic. For example, by

attending the ACE writing center, they advised for the essay to also stay on topic and to give just

one example.

My understanding of genres are different types of categories. For community, its

something or someone within a community that has different beliefs. For a participant, it could

be someone who participates or is active in the community.
