The NFL Hires First Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer

The National Football League hired its first chief diversity and

inclusion officer, Salma Bashir, 37. The newly created position, which

goes into effect immediately, will report directly to the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Bashir has been working with the NFL since 2009, starting as a social responsibility

associate before being promoted to senior director of social responsibility and civic

communication in 2014. She was appointed senior vice president of social responsibility in 2017.

Bashir earned her bachelor’s degree in management from Yale University and an MBA

in human resource management, specialized in workplace diversity, from the University of Notre

Dame. Currently, she is a member of the Yale University President’s Diversity and Inclusion

Committee and the Muslim American Legal Community Education Fund.

“We are excited to promote Salma to this newly created position, and I look forward to

personally working with her. The NFL is committed to improving diversity efforts in the

workplace and Ms. Bashir has contributed so much to our efforts in her time here. We are lucky

to have someone like her on our team,” said Goodell.
