BLADE

 MEASUREMENTS  
 
Using  a  micrometer  or  dial  indicator  can  help  give  you  a  better  idea  of  what  is  
happening  with  your  blade  in  terms  of  balance,  transitions,  and  overall  thickness.  
 
The  following  measurements  are  typical  of  a  finished  reed  in  my  style.  
 
Tip  Width:  14-­‐15mm  

Tip:  0.10-­‐0.20  

Second  Notch:  0.35-­‐0.40  

Third  Notch:  0.45-­‐0.55  

Fourth  Notch:  0.55-­‐0.65  

Blade  Length:  26-­‐27mm  

Seventh  Notch:  0.70-­‐0.80  

Collar:  0.80-­‐0.95  

 
• Tip:  0mm  back  
• Second  Notch:  tip  of  the  “thumbnail”  where  the  wings  meet  
• Third  Notch:  the  “heart”  
• Seventh  Notch:  beginning  of  the  back  third  
• Collar:  very  end  of  the  blade  
 
In  general,  the  channels  are  approximately  0.05  lighter  than  the  spine  at  any  given  point.
