Opening Ethic
Teacher: Assalamu’alaikum wr wb, good morning everybody
Student: Good morning, Miss
Teacher: How are you today?
Student: Great

Teacher: Such a blessing for me hearing that all of you is in a good condition today. I hope all of you
still in a good condition and be a better man day by day. I never forget to remember you comply
with health protocols because we’re still in COVID-19 pandemic, hope this pandemic will end as soon
as possible, Aamiin. Ok, before we start our lesson today, let’s pray together. Pray begin
Teacher: Aamiin. First, please fulfil the attendance in google form that I share. I’ll sent you a link at
the Zoom chat. Have you see it?
Student: Yes, Miss

Teacher: Ok, thank you for your confirmation. And now, let’s start our lesson today about Chemical
Equilibrium in Biodiesel Production. This is our basic competence and lesson objectives for today

Apperception

Teacher: Last week, we’ve already learn about what Equilibrium Chemistry it is. Is anyone want to
share with us about it?

TASYA QORI: condition in the course of a reversible chemical reaction in which no net change in the
amounts of reactants and products occurs
Teacher: It’s e great answer, Tasya. Is anyone want to explain what Tasya’s explanation means?
CYNTHIA: Me, Miss
Teacher: Ok, CYNTHIA. What’s your opinion?

CYNTHIA: Given sufficient time, an overall reaction will appear stopped, i.e., the concentrations of
reactants and products in the system remain unchanged, although the forward reaction and the
reverse reaction may still be going on. The reaction appears stopped because the forward reaction
proceeds at the same rate as the reverse reaction. The reaction system at this state is in chemical.
equilibrium.

Teacher: Awesome, CYNTHIA! And now, let me remind you about some factors that can affecting
shifted of equilibrium chemistry. Can anyone want to tell us what is equilibrium chemistry shift
means?
FARHAN: "A system at equilibrium, when stressed, will shift to offset the stress” This means if we
add reactant, equilibrium goes right, away from the reactant. If we add product, equilibrium goes
left, away from the product. If we remove product, equilibrium goes right, making product.
Teacher: Good! Based on your statement, Farhan, what’s factor that can change the equilibrium?

FARHAN: the concentration of reactant or product, Miss, adding or removing reactants or products
from a reaction system
Teacher: Excellent! Is anyone can tell us more about the factors?

BERLIANA: Me, Miss. Another factor that can shift equilibrium chemistry are increasing or
decreasing partial pressures of reactants and/or products in a gaseous reaction system, and
increasing or decreasing the temperature of the reaction system

Teacher: Awesome, Berlin! Thank you for your great answer. I hope all of us didn’t forget about the
lesson that we studied before. Ok,

Motivation
Teacher: Did you see the picture here?
Student: Yes, Miss
Teacher: What it is?
NADIA: It is gas station, miss.
Teacher: Correct, Nadia. What kind of fuel that the gas station sell?
NADIA: Pertamax Racing 100, Pertamax Turbo 98, Biosolar, and Pertalite
Teacher: Good, Nadia. And now, can anyone tell us what they are?
ASEP ROY: oil palm, castor bean, and soybean

Teacher: Good job, Asep! Guess what, oil palm, castor bean, and soybean are raw material of a kind
of fuel that sold in the gas station before. Guess it, what kind of fuel that made by this three
material? ASEP ROY: Biosolar, Miss?

Teacher: Correct, Asep! Biosolar, known well as biodiesel, is an alternative fuel similar to
conventional or ‘fossil’ diesel. Biodiesel can be produced from straight vegetable oil, animal oil/fats,
tallow and waste cooking oil. The process used to convert these oils to Biodiesel is called
transesterification. Biodiesel has many environmentally beneficial properties. The main benefit of
biodiesel is that it can be described as ‘carbon neutral’. This means that the fuel produces no net
output of carbon in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). This effect occurs because when the oil crop
grows it absorbs the same amount of CO2 as is released when the fuel is combusted. In fact,
biodiesel is the most sustainable liquid fuel, reducing carbon emissions on average by 50% to 81%, in
comparison with fossil fuels. It is good for our earth, right?
Stimulation
Teacher: Ok, now I will ask you a question, is there anyone can tell us how oil palm, castor bean, and
soybean oil transformed to biodiesel?
RIFA: Is it squeezed, Miss?
Teacher: Mmm your answer is still unsound. Anyone can give your opinion, please?
IBRAHIM: Is it cooked, Miss?
Teacher: Still unsound, Baim. Ok, do you ever hear about transesterification?
Student: Not yet, Miss

Teacher: Transesterification is the process in which fat or oil reacts with an alcohol to form
esters and glycerol. A catalyst is used to improve the reaction rate and yield. Because the
reaction is reversible, excess alcohol is used to shift the equilibrium to the product side.

Problem Statement
RAHMA ZULFA: Could I ask a question, Miss?
Teacher: Sure!
RAHMA ZULFA: How does the transesterification occur?
Teacher: Great answer, Rahma!
RIFA: I want to ask too, Miss. (ceritanya buru-buru, saking penasarannya)
Teacher: Sure, Rifa
RIFA: What the correlation between biosolar or biodiesel production and our topic?
Teacher: You’re smart, Rifa! Ok, for answering your curiousity, let’s see the video first!

Data collecting
Teacher: Ok, have you finished to watch it?
Student: Yes, I have, Miss
Teacher: What do you get from the video?
FARHAN: Process, and what.. (kaya lagi mengeja, terus nanti aku potong)
Teacher: Ups! It’s not the time to share your result. But, thank you, Farhan, to try answer it with some
vibrancy. Keep it up, Farhan!
FARHAN: Thank you, Miss.
Teacher: My pleasure, Farhan. Ok, now we’re going to identify what happen in the video before. I’ve
already prepare your worksheet, the video, and learning material in our Google Classroom. Please to
access the follow link. (kasih link) Have you access it?
Student: Yes, Miss

Teacher: Ok, now please write down your answer on it! Make sure you do it by yourself (Jeda 30
detik untuk isi worksheet)

Data Processing
Teacher: Have you finished?
Student: Yes, Miss
Teacher: Awesome! And now we will play a game, called I ASK, YOU SMILEEE..
FARHAN: Just smiling your question? (sambil ketawa)

Teacher: Not just smiling, Farhan, it means when I ask you a question, you must smile to us and
answer the question. Are you ready guys?
Student: Yes, Miss

Teacher: Ok, first question, what are the color changes of the reaction mixture form start to finish
point?

RIFA: I want to answer, Miss. In first stage, the mixture of potassium hydroxide and methanol is
colorless. The color of soybean oil is orange-brownish. Then, when alcohol/catalyst that is colorless
added into the oil, the color turn into brown. When we hold back the solution for a while, the color
separate into two part. In the bottom, it is brown. And in the upper, it is yellowish. Then, went we
add tha alcohol again, the oil turn more yellowish.
Teacher: Excellent, RIFA! Ok, next, can anyone predict what happen in that reaction?

TASYA QORI: Me, Miss. In some sources that I have read before, the vegetable oil is consist if
triglyceride. When triglyceride added by methanol, it forms methyl ester and diglyceride. And when
diglyceride added by methanol again, it forms methyl ester and mono glyceride. Because of the
video just showing two times of adding methanol, I think glycerol not formed in there. Teacher: Why
glycerol not formed in there?

HERLINDA: Because when I access the link that you give in my worksheet before, I see that
transesterification reaction product is 3 methyl ester and 1 glycerol. For getting glycerol, it must
though 3 steps.
Teacher: Awesome, Herlinda! And now, why this reaction called reversible reaction?

CYNTHIA: Transesterification that occur in this reaction is a reversible reaction and will reach equilibrium
as the reaction proceeds. Since transesterification is a reversible reaction, if stoichiometric
reactants are used, i.e., 3 mol of methanol reacting with 1 mol of triglyceride, the reaction will reach
equilibrium after a certain reaction time. At that time the reaction mixture will contain esters, mono-
glycerides, and diglycerides, as well as the reactants of triglycerides and methanol.

Teacher: Wow, you must be a good reader, CYNTHIA! You read a lot. Thank you for your answer, and
now the last question. If you are a biodiesel producer, what will you do to make your product as
much as possible?

FARHAN: I think the biodiesel producer will generally add twice as much methanol as
stoichiometrically required. The additional methanol drives the reaction towards the biodiesel,
resulting in a completion of triglyceride conversion to biodiesel, according to Le Chatelier's principle.
Teacher: Good job, Hana! You are a good thinker.

Verification

Teacher: And know, we’re open our worksheet again. I have remember that Rahma and Rifa asking
some questions. Can you repeat your question, Rahma? RAHMA ZULFA: Sure, how does the
transesterification occur?
Teacher: is there anyone can try to answer Rahma’s question?

SRI HIDAYATI: Transesterification is the process in which fat or oil reacts with an alcohol to form
esters and glycerol. A catalyst is used to improve the reaction rate and yield. Because the reaction is
reversible, excess alcohol is used to shift the equilibrium to the product side. Teacher: Excellent, Sri!
And now, Rifa, you’re turn.
RIFA: What the correlation between biosolar or biodiesel production and our topic?
Teacher: Is there anyone want to answer it?

ASEP ROY: Me, Miss. In a reversible reaction, reacting molecules in a closed system collide with each
other and use the energy to break chemical bonds and form new products. Enough energy is present
in the system for the same process to occur with the products. Teacher: Mmmm and..?

TASYA QORI: In transesterification, when methyl ester and diglyceride/mono-glyceride/glycerol have

enough energy to break their bonds, they will react again and form the reactant again. Teacher: Ver
nice, Tasya!

Evaluation

Teacher: And know, can anyone help us to give your mind about equilibrium chemistry in biodiesel
production and what should we do to increase the biodiesel product?
CYNTHIA: Me, Miss. In biodiesel production, transesterification occurred. Transesterification is a
reversible reaction, because it has a possibility to form their reactant again. When methyl ester and
diglyceride/mono-glyceride/glycerol as products have enough energy to break their bonds, they will
react again and form the reactant again.

CYNTHIA: I want to add CYNTHIA’s answer. For increasing biodiesel products, we can add twice as
much methanol as stoichiometrically required. The additional methanol drives the reaction towards
the biodiesel, resulting in a completion of triglyceride conversion to biodiesel, according to Le
Chatelier's principle.

Teacher: Thank you very much CYNTHIA and Cynthia. Please, give us a big applause for our great
lesson today

Evaluation

Teacher: Ok, now, to make sure our knowledge are already in our mind, please visit the link and fulfil
some questions that I share in Zoom chat. It takes only 3 minutes. Please do the task by yourself. Are
you ready? The time start now.

(pura-puranya 3 menit)

Teacher: Time is up! Have you finished it?

Students: Yes. Miss

Closing

Teacher: Alright, we are standing in the end of our lesson today. Before we close the meeting, let’s
pray together. Start to pray.

Teacher: Pray is never ended, but we must do another activity. Thank you so much for join this class.
Keep health and keep happy. And always remember, don’t let you body, your soul weak, if you didn’t
want the world hard to you. See you next week. Bye. Wassalamu’alaikum wr wb.
