To whom it may concern,

The process I went through to decide to become a teacher was a long and difficult
adventure. Throughout the process, I knew that helping others was what I needed in my
professional life. Sitting in a cubicle day in and day out was not the way I wanted to spend my
professional career, rather I want to inspire others into becoming their best selves.
I thought about becoming a teacher when I was a senior in high school. I took classes
that allowed me for plenty of time with students of all ages and grade levels. I realized in
college the time I spent with the students was when I felt most passionate about what I was
doing and then I decided that would be my career.
My junior year of college, I decided to volunteer as a football coach at a local high school
nearby the University of Illinois. Up to this point, I had experience teaching preschoolers, junior
high students, and leading high school Younglife. Coaching football at Mahomet Seymour High
School was a different experience. I was given more responsibilities, and I was given an
opportunity to build real relationships with my players. I saw myself in so many of them. I
reflected on all of the struggles I went through as a young man in high school and college. I
thought about all the people that were there for me, who were eager to help me through my
issues. That is when I realized that becoming a teacher and coach gave me the opportunity to
mentor a countless number of coming-of-age adults undergoing one of the most difficult
periods in their lives. I am proud that my decisions have led me to the point to be a temporary
guide to students in their lives.
When I teach, I look to be patient, culturally responsive and encouraging to diverse
populations of students. I strive to be flexible and adjust my teaching style to fit to individual
students and to maximize students’ abilities to reach their potential.
I want to become a teacher because I want to help students navigate life. I am not
paving the path for them, simply guiding them in their own journeys, and stepping into help
however they need. I am eager to see the impact I can have on others; I am excited to help
students blossom and find their own self-fulfillment in life. I look forward to having an
opportunity at _______________.
