Explanation on Groupwork

Steps:
1. Choose a debatable topic (hint: hot/crucial topic of the society, topic related to your
major – field of study)
2. Determine your group’s opinion (whether your group – all members agree or
disagree on the topic)
3. Identify keywords for supporting your opinion on the chosen topic
- If you agree with the topic: then list keywords to point out the benefits/advantage of
it
- If you disagree with the topic: then list keywords to point out the
consequences/disadvantage of it
- Note: if you want to support A, then show the positive effects of A, do not show the
negative effects of ~A
- Keep asking “what else…” in order to have as many of keywords as possible (do not
use only 2-3 keywords for 11 arguments, the best is 11 keywords for 11 arguments, if
not 7-8 keywords would be fine)

4. Draw the mind-map/storyline to link the keywords (should divide the
keywords into groups, if that support for clearer storyline: see example in slide 6)
5. Determine the argument type for each keyword (if the keyword is more of
percentage/rate, then use statically argument; if the data is available, then it’s
better to use math.; if you want to compare, then it’s better to use analogy, etc.)
Note: Should start with the argument by definition first, so that your topic and
opinion is clear to the audience Mind map put at the 1st slide
Categorical syllogism have to draw Venn -> (un)sound + cogent
No need to follow the order of argument types that you learned in the class,
instead please feel free to allocate the argument’s order
6. Conduct the arguments following the correct formats (one argument per slide,
name of the argument type must be mentioned, following by the argument in P1
(premise 1):…, P2 (premise 2):… , …, C (conclusion): …) (see example in slide 5)
Note: 1st slide should be for group introduction, 2nd slide is for topic and opinion
Then following by at least 11 slides for 11 arguments
You can add more slides to explain/support the argument slide

P1: All developed countries are countries that have high living standards (in
terms of healthcare, education, income, policy and so forth).
P2: All students are people who prefer to live in countries that have high
living standards.
C: All students are people who prefer to live in developed countries.
MainC: Therefore, all students should not come back after studying abroad
in developed countries.

Topic: Bad behavior of Vietnamese Internet users
Opinion: Agree
Keywords: Cyberbullying, Fake new, Discrimination, Reputation, Ad hominem
Reply from Dr. Tu:
5 main keywords  very good, but need to find more keywords (as many as possible to
write 11 arguments: the best case is to have 11 keywords)
 Should answer the question "What's else?" to go deeper and find more keywords (in
order to draw the mindmap/storyline)
For example:
- with keyword "cyberbullying", what are the consequences of cyberbullying?
- with keywords "fake news", what are the consequences of sharing/providing “fake
news”? Similar works for other keywords
Moreover, when drawing the mindmap/storyline, we can approve/explain by group:
economy, society (individuals, family), environment (if any) [3 dimensions of sustainable
