1. Nomination – The speaker establishes a topic. He or she may start off with news
announcements as they promise extended talk. Also, in nomination, communication is open
for opinions and efficiently signals the beginning of a new topic.
2. Restriction – Any limitation you may have as a speaker. Here, avoid sideswiping from the
topic during the conversation to avoid communication breakdown.
4. Topic Control – Control covers how procedural formality or informality affects the
development of topic conversations. Remember to avoid unnecessary interruptions and
topic shifting.
Example: In meeting, you may only have the turn to speak after the chairperson directs you
to do so.
5. Topic Shifting – Moving from one topic to another. Before shifting, make sure that the
previous topic was nurtured enough.
6. Repair – It refers to how speakers address the problems in speaking, listening, and
comprehending. According to Schegloff et. al., 1977, repair is self-righting mechanism in any
social interaction.
