TYPES OF COMMUNICATIVE STRATEGY

1. Nomination – The speaker establishes a topic. He or she may start off with news
announcements as they promise extended talk. Also, in nomination, communication is open
for opinions and efficiently signals the beginning of a new topic.

2. Restriction – Any limitation you may have as a speaker. Here, avoid sideswiping from the
topic during the conversation to avoid communication breakdown.

3. Turn-taking – In turn-taking, others also have the opportunity to talk. It is a process by

which people decide who takes the conversational floor. Speaker may also employ visual
signals.

4. Topic Control – Control covers how procedural formality or informality affects the
development of topic conversations. Remember to avoid unnecessary interruptions and
topic shifting.
Example: In meeting, you may only have the turn to speak after the chairperson directs you
to do so.

5. Topic Shifting – Moving from one topic to another. Before shifting, make sure that the
previous topic was nurtured enough.

6. Repair – It refers to how speakers address the problems in speaking, listening, and
comprehending. According to Schegloff et. al., 1977, repair is self-righting mechanism in any
social interaction.

7. Termination – It is the participants’ close initiating expressions that end a topic in a

conversation. Make sure that the conversation ends clearly. The participants can also share
what you learned from the conversation.
