When to treat a child’s cough

- If you think your child's cough is due to asthma or allergies, make an appointment. A cough that persists for more
than 10 days is a sign that your child should see a doctor. Another sign that you should treat your child's cough is if
the cough persists for more than 3 days and the fever is above 100.4 degrees F (38 degrees C).

Ways to relieve cough in children:

1. Use nasal drops if your child has a stuffy cough. - It is used with a nasal syringe to blow the nose, it helps to
soften mucus.
2. Give fluids - Giving warm water helps fight illness and keeps your child's airways moist and healthy. You can also
give your infant breast milk or formula and water and juice for older children.
3. Give honey - Honey has antibacterial properties and helps fight infections (only do this when your child is 1 year
or older)
4. Give cough syrup. - Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for children 4 years of age and
younger.
5. Use an Air Humidifier - Using an air humidifier will help keep your child's airways from drying out and it will also
loosen mucus, which will help relieve congestion.
6. You can only use Vapour Rub on the chest and feet to relieve a child's cough.

Things you should not do when your child has a cough:

1. Do not apply Vapour Rub to the inside of your child's nose. - It can actually increase mucus and clog a child's
airways by applying it to the inside of the nose.
2. Avoid giving children Carbonated Drinks - Carbonated drinks can irritate the child's throat.
3. Do not give cough drops - Cough drops is a choking hazard for children.
