ORLANDO’S NURSING PROCESS THEORY

Ida Jean Orlando was a first generation Irish American born in 1926. She dedicated her life
studying nursing and graduated in 1947 and receive a Bachelor of Science degree in public
health nursing from St. John University, New York in 1951. She was married to Robert Pelletier
and lived in Boston area. Orlando is well being educated with many advanced degrees in
nursing, making her a respectable and credible role-model.

The major dimensions of the model explain that the role of the nurse is to find out and meet
the patient’s immediate need for help. This helps the patient to recover quickly and
comfortably. The patient's presenting behavior may be a plea for help, however, the help
needed may not be what it appears to be. Therefore, nurses need to use their perception,
thoughts about the feeling engendered from their thoughts to explore with patients the
meaning of their behavior.
This process helps nurse find out the nature of the distress and what help the patient needs.

The goal of this model is for a nurse to act deliberately rather than automatically. This way, a
nurse will have a meaning behind the action which means the patient gets care geared
specifically toward his or her needs at that time. This nursing process is also one that can easily
be adapted to different patients with different problems, and can be stopped at any time,
depending on the patient’s progress or health. This makes Orlando’s theory universal for the
nursing field.
After all the great works of Orlando her good works ended on November 28, 2007.When she
died at the age of 81.
Ida Jean Orlando was internationally known as psychiatric health nurse, theorist, and
researcher who developed the “Deliberative Nursing Process Theory.” Her theory allows nurses
to create an effective nursing care plan that can also be easily adapted when and if any
complications arise with the patient.

The Deliberative Nursing process has five stages:

• Assessment
• Diagnosis
• Planning
• Implementation
• Evaluation
