The AAMD is the primary resource for medical dosimetrists that promotes and
supports the medical dosimetry profession. This association defines the scope of
practice for medical dosimetrists and provides opportunities for skill development and
maintenance of Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) certification. The AAMD
has established a Code of Ethics for members of the profession to aspire to, as well as
goals to aim for growth and success.
There are many committees that are established in the AAMD, including the
annual conference, career services, communications, continuing education, directed
journal reading, international outreach, formal education, membership, and nominations
and volunteer committees. These committees are made up of dedicated volunteers of
which the AAMD relies on to provide their members with the many services offered.
Most committees have regularly scheduled monthly conference calls where projects are
discussed, and tasks are divided amongst members.
As a new medical dosimetry student, I had the desire to become involved in this
important association in order to expand my professional network, gain volunteer
experience in my career path, and become more involved in the medical dosimetry
community. I decided to join the Nominations and Volunteer Committee in February
2021. This committee has a conference call each month and is primarily responsible for
overseeing volunteer placements and managing the AAMD Election process. It has been
my responsibility to help review volunteer applications and contact volunteers to
determine which committee would be appropriate for their skills and interests. As a
member of this committee, I have also helped to brainstorm ideas for a volunteer
appreciation gift to be distributed to all AAMD volunteers next year.
