SUBJECT: Landing Gear - Main Wheels and Nose Wheels - PRECAUTIONS FOR
INSTALLATION OF BEARING CONES

1. EFFECTIVITY:

Goodrich main wheel assemblies and nose wheel assemblies for civil aircraft

2. REFERENCE:

Goodrich Component Maintenance Manuals (CMMs)

Timken Service Information Letter TT160704 “Aircraft Landing Wheel Bearing Part
Number Check”. Place an order for this letter at www.timken.com (click on “Aerospace”,
then click on “Contact Aerospace”).

3. PURPOSE:

To make sure that correct bearing cones are installed in wheel halves.

4. REASON:

Maintenance personnel at some operators did not install correct bearing cones. The
incorrect bearing cones caused damage to landing gear.

Incorrect bearing cones are installed for the reasons that follow:

A. Two different bearing cones can have almost the same part numbers. Some part
numbers have one letter or number that is different.

B. Two different bearing cones can have almost the same dimensions, but have
different inner diameters. You can install some incorrect bearing cones, but these
cones cause damage.

5. PROCEDURE:

Use the necessary procedures to make sure that correct bearing cones are installed.

Find the part numbers of correct bearing parts in the Illustrated Parts List (IPL) of the
applicable Component Maintenance Manual (CMM). Service Bulletins or Service Letters
can introduce new bearing parts.
