Seismic Fragility Assessment of Non-Engineered Buildings using Gaussian Process Regression

Short Abstract:
To estimate the fragility of a building against earthquakes, extensive numbers of ground motion
simulations must be performed for every building sample. This makes the fragility calculation of a large
population tedious. In this study, we want to explore the use of Gaussian Process Regression to estimate
the fragility of any individual building within the population based on the behaviour of available building
samples hence negating the need for time-consuming simulations. To obtain accurate predictions,
sufficient numbers of data points and realistic distribution of building parameters are necessary. This
research is part of a project to assess the vulnerability of the Indonesian Residential Building Stock.

Some of our available publications on this project is this paper in the World Conference on Earthquake
Engineering, titled “On the behavior of Non-Engineered Residential Buildings in Bandung, Indonesia: a
Case Study”. While additional readings on research related to our work by another author can be seen
here.

Benefits of working in this project include, 1) clear target and working method, as this is an extension of
an undergoing research, 2) high possibility of publication, and 3) the possibility of working in a fast
paced, structured, and multidisciplinary research environment. If this is something you are looking for,
please contact the above mentioned contact person.
