Subjects and Predicates

The subject of a sentence is who or what the sentence is about It contains a


noun. The predicate is the rest of the sentence, which explains what the
subject did (the verb).

Let’s look at an example:


Mr. Morton sat on the
bus.

Mr. Morton is the subject and the predicate is sat on the bus.
Directions: Circle the subject and underline the predicate in each sentence.

1. Mr. Morton walked.

2. Mr. Morton talked.

3. Mr. Morton wrote a letter.

4. He was nervous.

5. The cat stretched.

6. Mr. Morton knocked.

7. The neighbor looked out the window.

8. She opened the door.

9. I love this video.

10. Pearl proposed.
