CURRICULUM DESIGN AND INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP

(SYNTHESIS & REACTION)

Curriculum design is the planning period when instructors organize the instructional units for
their course. Curriculum design involves planning activities, readings, lessons, and assessments that
achieve educational goals.

Teachers design each curriculum with a specific educational purpose in mind. The ultimate goal
is to improve student learning, but there are other reasons to employ curriculum design as well. For
example, designing a curriculum for middle school students with both elementary and high school
curricula in mind helps to make sure that learning goals are aligned and complement each other from one
stage to the next. If a middle school curriculum is designed without taking prior knowledge from
elementary school or future learning in high school into account it can create real problems for the
students.

Curriculum design focuses on the creation of the overall course blueprint, mapping content to
learning objectives, including how to develop a course outline and build the course. Each learning
objective is met with assessment strategies, exercises, content, subject matter analysis, and interactive
activities.

Often, teachers may transition into curriculum development if they are seeking to continue
working in education without directly teaching students. If you are seeking alternatives to classroom
teaching, there are many choices, including curriculum design
