ASSESSMENT FOR STUDENT PERFORMANCE

(SYNTHESIS & REACTION)

Student assessment is the process of evaluating students’ abilities and achievements. It is an

integral activity to effective teaching. Student assessment is a critical aspect of the teaching and learning
process. Whether teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level, it is important for instructors to
strategically evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching by measuring the extent to which students in the
classroom are learning the course material.

The measurement of student learning through assessment is important because it provides useful
feedback to both instructors and students about the extent to which students are successfully meeting
course learning objectives.

The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or

progress, or to determine student interests to make judgments about their learning process. After receiving
this information, teachers can reflect on each student’s level of achievement, as well as on specific
inclinations of the group, to customize their teaching plans.

Continuous assessment provides day-to-day feedback about the learning and teaching process.
Assessment can reinforce the efficacy of teaching and learning. It also encourages the understanding of
teaching as a formative process that evolves over time with feedback and input from students.
