to the miners. He saw that the miners needed strong pants, so he began to make them. He used cloth that people
made tents from. He put rivets on the pockets to make them strong because the men put rocks in their pockets.
These pants were very strong and lasted a long time. The pants became very popular immediately.
Later Mr. Strauss started making jeans from cotton cloth from Nimes, France. People called this cloth
denim. Denim was popular in the fifteenth century. Christopher Columbus used denim for the sails of his ship.
Sailors in Genoa, Italy, wore denim pants. The word “jeans” comes from the word “Genoa”. Mr. Strauss made

answer (A, B, C or D) for the questions 5 and 6:
PASSAGE 1
Today, millions of people want to learn or improve their English but it is difficult to find the best method. Is
it better to study in Britain or America or to study in your own country?
The advantages of going to Britain seem obvious. Firstly, you will be able to listen to the language all the
time you are in the country. You will be surrounded completely by the language wherever you go. Another
29
ENGLISH 9 ( 2021-2022 ) Class_ 9a1
advantage is that you have to speak the language if you are with other people. In Italy, it is always possible, in the
class, to speak Italian if you want to and the learning is slower.
On the other hand, there are also advantages to staying at home to study. You don't have to make big changes
to your life. As well as this, it is also a lot cheaper than going to Britain but it is never possible to achieve the
results of living in the UK. If you have a good teacher in Italy, I think you can learn in a more concentrated way
than being in Britain without going to a school.
So, in conclusion, I think that if you have enough time and enough money, the best choice is to spend some
time in the UK. This is simply not possible for most people, so being here in Italy is the only viable option. The
most important thing to do in this situation is to maximize your opportunities: to speak only English in class and
to try to use English whenever possible outside the class.
1. People who don't have enough time and money should go to Italy to learn English. _____
2. You have more chances to practice English in Britain. _____
3. Britain is a good place to learn English. _____
4. You can spend much more money when learning in your country than in Britain _____
5. What is the article about?
A. How many people learn English. B. The best way to learn English
C. English schools in England and America D. How to live in Britain.
6. What is one of the advantages of going to the UK to learn English?
A. The language schools are better. B. There are no Italians in Britain.
C. You will have to speak English and not your language. D. You can have good teachers.

In the early years of television, educational specialists believed that it would be very useful in teaching and
learning. Many schools have brought television sets, intending to use them effectively to improve the quality of
education; but actually they are rarely used properly in classrooms. Meanwhile, children spending the majority of
their out-of-school hours watching TV and their typical school days proceed as if television did not exist.
There are some explanations for the failure of television to get the interest of the teachers. Firstly, the schools
that purchased television sets have not set aside money for equipment repairs and maintenance so these television
sets are sooner and later out of work. Secondly these schools have not found an effective way to train teachers to
integrate television into their ongoing instructional programs. Lastly, most teachers do not regard the quality of
television and its usefulness in the classroom.
Teachers at the schools work hard for at least twelve years to train their students to become good readers.
However, according a recent statistic, teenagers seldom spend their free time reading books and newspapers but
watching television instead.
