Comparing and Contrasting
Multimodal Texts

Introduction

How do people communicate?

The advent of 21st century is characterized by different innovations. People

are able to adjust and adopt the latest trends brought by the information age which
is also known as the digital age. There are also notable changes on how people
communicate during this era. Communication during this period can be performed
in various ways – verbal, non—verbal, visual and written.

As presented by Michele Anstey Geoff Bull of Curriculum Leadership Journal,

the definition of literacy was expanded in the 21st century. It refers to a flexible,
sustainable command of a set of capabilities in the use and production of traditional
texts and new technologies, spoken language, print and multimedia.

Learning Competency

At the end of this Guided Learning Activity Kit, you should be able to:

1. identify the different multimodal texts;

2. be familiar with the features of multimodal texts; and

3. compare and contrast the same topic in multimodal texts

1|Page
Objectives

Compare and contrast the presentation of the same topic in multimodal

texts.

Review

You have acquired the skill in recognizing similarities and differences of

things around you from your previous lesson. You already know how important it is
in your daily life. Through identifying the similarities and differences of things, you
can do many things such as giving comments down to forming decisions.

Before we proceed to our next discussion, recall the time that you were inside
your elementary classroom while listening to your teacher and having fun with your
classmates. Compare and contrast your situation then and now.

Discussion

Now, let us have our discussion about multimodal texts.

Text, in general is a collection of words or letters that are understandable by

the reader. On a computer, text is added, viewed, edited, and modified using a text
editor or word processing program.

Nowadays, we communicate using different ways, and those are what we call
modes. Examples of modes are:

• Reading
• Writing
• Listening
• Speaking
• Viewing

2|Page
There are times that we use several modes at a time. This is what we call the
multimodal texts.

Examples of multimodal texts are:

1.
Picture book, in which the
textual and visual elements are
arranged on individual pages
that contribute to an overall set
of bound pages.

What you need to know more about multimodal texts:

According to Mills (2010), authors of multimodal texts must have knowledge

on the topic; on how to carry meanings through text, knowledge about digital
technology and of the processes required to create innovative digital media
productions.

According to Kress (2010), textual knowledge includes both semiotic (study of

signs) knowledge and genre. Semiotic knowledge concerns on how we carry
meanings in various ways in the text, where each style has its own exact task and
purpose.

Authors of multimodal texts also need to be able to creatively mix the various
modes in making multimodal texts. For example, in making picture books, it must
be a combination of visual and print resources.

According to Martin 2008, genre concerns about the information of the

community functions and contexts in which a text is produced and used, and how
the text is organized and presented to see its exact social purpose. Successful
multimodal composition includes consideration of purpose, audience, and text type.
It requires knowledge to produce innovative technical content to produce innovative
digital media productions, including machines (such as computers, cellphones,
tablets, and etc.) involved and the media applications (such as photo or video editors,
photoshops and etc.)

A hurricane is a dangerous storm. This type of strong storm has high winds.
It can bring a large amount of rain. Hurricanes are dangerous because they are very
large storms. They cover a wide area as they move. There are steps to take before a
hurricane hits. It is important to watch the news and have a plan. Before a hurricane
hits, board up windows. Bring in outside pets and furniture. Create a supply kit with
first aid equipment, food, and water. Flashlights and batteries are good supplies to
have in a hurricane. The high winds in hurricanes sometimes make the power go

out. These are helpful tools when there is no electricity. During hurricanes, it is
important to stay inside. Stay away from windows. If there are warnings to evacuate
or leave your home because of danger, follow the directions. After the hurricane, stay
inside until it is safe to go outside. Check on neighbors to see if anyone is hurt. Stay
with the adults in charge who can tell you what is safe. They will tell you how to
help. Hurricanes are dangerous storms because they are large and sometimes slow-
moving. There are important steps to take to prepare and to be safe during and after
the storm. It is important to be aware and ready.

Text 2

There have been many devastating hurricanes to hit the United States. These
hurricanes are famous in a bad way. They have been large disasters. Hurricane
Katrina was a deadly storm in 2005. It hit New Orleans, Louisiana. The storm was
stronger than anyone thought it would be. The lakes around New Orleans had too
much water, and it flooded homes. The damage was so expensive. Many people lost
their homes. Many people lost their lives. Hurricane Sandy was a large storm that
hit in 2012. It hit New Jersey and the New York City area. Many other states were
affected by the storm, but the worst damage was in the northeast. Streets and
subways flooded. Many businesses and homes were destroyed. Hurricane Harvey
was a destructive hurricane that hit the Houston, Texas, area in 2017. It moved very
slowly, so it stayed in one area for a long time. The powerful storm rained over 50
inches. It flooded the city and many small towns. Thousands of people had to be
rescued out of their homes. Many hurricanes do not bring as much damage as these
hurricanes did. Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and Hurricane Harvey are just
a few of the most notable ones in the United States.

Acknowledgment
The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt gratitude
to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to the successful
preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and distribution of the
Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all learning areas across grade
levels as a response to providing the learners with developmentally-appropriate,
contextualized and simplified learning resources with most essential learning
competencies (MELCs)-based activities anchored on the principles of guided learning
and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the writers
and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting their best efforts
to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the implementation of learning
delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully
evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly extending its

financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of these learning resources
for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close coordination with

the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval of the GLAKs and for
their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the learners
the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish the tasks and for
gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would not be

possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to serving our
Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!

The Management Team
