Dear Second Grade Families,

I hope that you had an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving break. As we

come back into school, I wanted to let you know some of the fun things that we

have going on in the classroom.

We have just finished up Unit 3 in Everyday Math. They completed their

test just before the break. These tests should be coming home to you shortly for

you to see and sign in their Friday folders. We are now beginning Unit 4 in math.

The family letter for this unit will be coming home today. In this unit we focus on

telling time, learning about base-10 blocks, expanded notation, and measurement.

We will be working on this unit over the next few days.

In Fundations we finished up our Unit 4 before Thanksgiving. We took our

test on Monday, November 22. These tests should go home soon in their Friday

folders as well. We are now moving into Unit 5 for Fundations. This unit focuses on

syllables and identifying how we can break words into parts. Their new Fundations

packet will come out next week and will be due right before the holiday break.

During reading we have been identifying story elements that we can see:

characters, setting, problem, and solution. We have been reading Jack and the

Beanstalk in class and identifying story elements that we see within the story. We
will be moving into Reader’s Theater on Wednesday where students get to perform

a play with a group of students.

Writing time has focused on writing informational pieces. Students get to

pick what they are experts in and write a book about their topic. Their topics have

been so cute and I can not wait to read the finished products!

Finally, in science we are still focusing on making glue. Our design goal is to

make the stickiest glue we can. We have learned, researched, planned, tested, and

created design goals. We are about to start making our first glue and test how

sticky it was.

As we move into the chillier times of the year, please remember to send your

child in with warm clothes for outside recess. These may include a coat, hat,

gloves, or scarf. We do try and have outside recess each day as long as weather

permits.

Don’t forget pretzel orders are due each Thursday so that we can have

pretzels on Friday during snack time!

I look forward to chatting with you soon and I hope you enjoy December

leading up to the holiday season! :)
