2. Humans have damaged 86 per cent of the world's rivers. Researchers looked at data on 25
over 2,500 rivers, but none in the Arctic and Antarctica or in deserts. The scientists looked at
biodiversity changes over the past 200 years. Humans have seriously damaged biodiversity in
over half of rivers. There are many reasons for this. One reason is new species of fish that are in
rivers. Other reasons include pollution, dams and climate change.
The worst-hit rivers are in the big cities of Europe and America. Sébastien Brosse , who led
the research, said rivers which have the most economic development near them, like the
Mississippi River or River Thames, are the most strongly impacted. The least-impacted are in
Africa and Australia. This is because of fewer factories in Africa and smaller populations around
rivers in Australia. He said rivers in rich nations are totally different to how they were 200 years
ago.

development near (1) them, like the Mississippi River or River Thames, are the most strongly
impacted. The least-impacted are in Africa and Australia. This is because of fewer factories in
Africa and smaller populations around rivers in Australia. (2) He said rivers in rich nations are
totally different to how (3) they were 200 years ago.

3. Many plants begin as seeds. (1) As the seed gets what it needs such as water, sunlight, and 25
nutrients from the soil, it begins to grow. The seed turns into a little sprout. It keeps growing until it
is a full-grown plant. (2) Then the plant makes new seeds, so that new plants can grow even after
the plant grows old and dies. Those seeds will then go through their growth process. Because
seeds go through this process over and over again, it is called a life cycle.
(3) Animals have life cycles too. A frog begins as an egg. When the egg hatches, it
turns into a tadpole. (4) The tadpoles grow legs and arms. Eventually, they grow into adult frogs.
The adult frogs lay eggs, so that new frogs can live even after the frog grows old and dies.
A dog’s life cycle is a little different than a frog’s, because a dog does not start out as
an egg. It is born from its mother’s belly. The puppy keeps growing and is eventually an adult dog.
(5) Then the adult dog has puppies to continue the life cycle!
Insects like caterpillars go through life cycles, too. Caterpillars begin as eggs. When
they hatch, they are larva. The caterpillar becomes a pupa, and inside of the pupa it turns into an
adult. The adult is not a caterpillar; it is a butterfly! (6) Then the butterfly lays eggs, so that new
caterpillars and butterflies can live even after the butterfly grows old and dies.
Plants and animals don’t stay the same throughout their lives, they grow and change
through their life cycle.

4. (1) New Year's Eve, also called Old Year's Night, is celebrated on December 31 , the 25
final day of the year. (2) It is celebrated all over the world with parties and social gathering with
usually a lot of fireworks and noise. In the United States of America, New York is the place where
this celebration is associated with. (3) People gather in the Times Square just before midnight in
the last minute of the countdown to watch the "ball dropping". The celebration is also associated
with parties in other parts of the world. In France, for instance, the celebration is called le
Réveillon. Special food is prepared accompanied with champagne. (4) People also go to the Eiffel
Tower in Paris to see fireworks display. In Japan, people traditionally clean their home. Buddhist
temple bells are rung 108 times at midnight. In Brazil, the beach of Copacabana is considered by
many to be the place of the most beautiful fireworks show in the world.
On New Year's Eve, people commit themselves with resolutions. These are made to
reform a habit and should go into effect and remain until fulfilment. New Year’s resolutions are the
perfect opportunity for the people who have failed to start making the changes that they have
always wanted to make. (5) Some of the most popular resolutions are to be a better person, to
lose weight, to exercise more, to eat healthy food, to quit a bad habit such as smoking, to watch
less TV, and to make more money. The problem with the New Year resolutions is that most of the
time people fail to fulfil their resolutions because they don't follow specific steps in choosing and
formulating achievable goals.
