JOHN BERGER (1926-2017) was an English essayist and cultural thinker as well as a prolific novelist,

poet, translator, and screenwriter.

G. (1972), a picaresque romance set in Europe in 1898 and probably the best known of his novels,
was praised for its clever details as well as for its portrayal of intricate sexual and interpersonal
relationships, and won the Man Booker Prize. His major fictional work of the 1980s, the trilogy INTO
THEIR LABOURS (consisting of the novels PIG EARTH, ONCE IN EUROPA, and LILAC AND FLAG), treats
the European peasant experience from its farming roots to contemporary economic and political
displacement and urban poverty.

PERMANENT RED (1960) was the first of many essay collections on art criticism, politics and
memory. It underlined his Marxist stance toward art and the difficulties he faced writing during the
Cold War. His studies of individual artists include THE SUCCESS AND FAILURE OF PICASSO (1965), a
controversial survey of that modernist's career, and ART AND REVOLUTION (1969), which examines
the work of Ernst Neizvestny and "the role of the artist in the USSR".

WAYS OF SEEING (1972), written to accompany a BBC series and echoing the work of Walter
Benjamin, aimed at demystifying art history and revealed the sometimes-underlying ways in which
meaning and ideology are conveyed through visual media. The book continues to be a key text in art
history education into the 21st century.
