member of Acmeist school of Russian poetry. Heavily censored and persecuted by the Soviet
authorities for counter-revolutionary activities, he spent most of his later years in exile.
He died anonymously en route to the Siberian gulag in 1938, thus fulfilling his own grim prophecy:
"Only in Russia is poetry respected; it gets people killed. Is there anywhere else where poetry is so
common a motive for murder?"
