Bale Lumbung is one of the traditional houses scattered in various parts of Indonesia which is very rich in
ethnic and cultural diversity. This house also symbolizes the welfare of the Sasak people since time
immemorial. From ancient times, as now, the island of Lombok is still a rice producer in Indonesia, so
the stock is distributed to other islands to meet the needs of rice in the archipelago. The Sasak tribe is
the majority population on the island of Lombok. They still uphold the traditions that have been passed
down from generation to generation by their ancestors. One that is still guarded is the rice barn, where
the Sasak men store their produce after harvest.

Description:

Bale Lumbung has 4 pillars as the foundation and the rice barn is located at the top of the building. This
pole is round and fairly high which is intended to prevent mice from climbing up and smelling the rice
above. If someone wants to put or take stock of rice, then he must climb the stairs to get it. For the
bottom, there is a kind of berugak which is used as a resting place as well as a place to guard. Usually
this building is located close to the animal cages near people's homes. The roof is made of weeds that
have been dried beforehand.

The barn building consists of two parts. At the bottom there is a lelasah, a kind of para-para used for
weaving or receiving guests. The upper part is a shelter with bamboo walls and thatched roofs. To
support the superstructure, four round pillars are used. The rice barn symbolizes the welfare and food
sufficiency of the Sasak people in Lombok.
