Christmas Trees

Christmas trees are seen by many people as an important part of Christmas. They can be
decorated with lights and ornaments. People often top them with an angel or star. Presents
can be put under the tree. Villages, towns, and cities may have their own Christmas trees.

In the 1500s, Christians brought real trees into the home. They were first lit up with candles
on the branches. (Don’t try this at home!) In the 1700s and 1800s, other decorations such
as paper ornaments, fruit, and candy were added to trees. Soon, people began hanging glass
ornaments on branches. Eventually, electric lights were used instead of candles.

Christmas trees are often strung with homemade garland. This garland can
be made by stringing popcorn or cranberries. The ornaments hung on trees
often have special meaning to families. Some ornaments have been passed
down from generation to generation.

Green artificial trees are often seen in homes today. These

trees are man-made. White or pink artificial trees have
also become popular.
