Job Duties for Health and Fitness Professionals Discussion:

Why is an internship an important experience in preparing kinesiology students for

professional practice?
Internships are critical to any professional career. Here we develop professional aptitude,
as well as help to strengthen our personal skills, and allows us to apply what knowledge and
skills we have obtained during the learning process.
Not only does this allow us to showcase our knowledge and experience, but it may also open
other opportunities into the kinesiology field, as we already know it is a very broad spectrum. An
internship may also be a way for you to test out and decide if the desired career is right for you.
What are five questions that ALL kinesiology students should ask themselves before
deciding to major in kinesiology?
1. What aspect of Kinesiology field am I interested in trying?
2. Why is Physical education important to me?
3. Am i committed to dedicating myself and time into helping others be a better version
of themselves?
4. Can I see myself continuing a career in Kinesiology in the long-foreseen future?
5. As Kinesiology field is one of the fastest growing majors in the nation. Could choosing
this field benefit me financially in the future? Is it a stable career choice?

What type of experience would like to have before graduating and applying for a
permanent job in your profession of choice?
My career of choice would be Rehabilitation (Physical Therapy). I have been in the
medical field for about 9 years now and have sustained prior experiences taking care of ill
stricken individuals which has provided me with substantial experience that would benefit me as
a Physical Therapist. More experience that I would like to obtain prior to permanently choosing
this career, is having some volunteer work under my belt that specifically pertains to the duties
of this job. Not only is having that experience good as this field is very competitive but is also
helps to ensure I am adequately prepared and capable of engaging with patients and workers
effectively. This career is very demanding and requires you to have many qualities and skills
such as: good communication skills, physical stamina/strength, interpersonal skills, compassion,
multi-tasking skills, listening/speaking skills, leadership skills, knowledge on equipment, and
observation skills etc. All these skills can be obtained by working closely with a mentor and
participating in volunteer work at a senior center/vet home. This will only enhance my ability to
perform at my highest level.
