The following are suggested communications messages/talking points that may help
inform the media and the general public of the new Adirondack Park burn ban and the
role of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in its enforcement.
● We have been working closely with the DEC to inform the public about the new
burn ban and how to make sure that they are in compliance.

● The burn ban applies to any form of burning in Adirondack Park, whether it is
bonfires, campfires or the burning of garbage.
○ The burn ban does not apply to campfires or grills using charcoal or
untreated wood, as those are safer to use.

● We are collaborating with the DEC to develop an informational campaign for this
ban.
○ Signage that informs the public about rules and fines that they could face
for violating them will be posted in high traffic areas in the park.
○ These signs will also have an educational component to discuss why it is
important to preserve the nature and wildlife of our parks.

● Violators of the ban are subject to prosecution and face a minimum fine of $500.

● We will be enforcing this by working with park officials to keep watch over these
high traffic areas such as campsites and hiking trails.

● There will be a number that park goers can call or text to give park authorities
information about the location of a burning incident they witness.

● This park has great historic value, and this is something that our office wants to
preserve.
