5 Minute Theory - LESSON 2 

 
The lines and spaces of the sta are numbered 
from the bottom to the top.  
 
 
In the empty boxes, put the number of the LINE 
that each quarter note is on.   
 
 
Now write the number of the SPACE that each 
quarter note is in.     
 
QUARTER NOTES below the  

 
QUARTER NOTES have a NOTE HEAD (the round part) and 
STEM (the stick). 
 

Sometimes quarter notes have a stem that attaches to 


the RIGHT SIDE of the note head and goes up. Create 
(3) more quarter notes like the ones shown STEMS UP.   

To keep stems from getting in the way of other music 


on the page, we sometimes attach it to the LEFT SIDE of 
the note head and draw it DOWN. Create (3) more 
quarter notes like the ones shown STEMS DOWN. 
 

Some note heads intersect a LINES of the sta and some are in the SPACES between the lines. Draw (2) 
more of each: ON the lines and BETWEEN the lines (in the spaces).
