There are some who would argue that the power of the press or any other media available

today have minimized the importance of speech in modern life. After all, who needs public

speaking skills when all they have to do is put their thoughts on a billboard or a newspaper

headline and display it for the whole world to see? The widespread accessibility of television,

radio and, perhaps most significantly, the Internet, coupled with the proper presentation, has

made it so that the most awkward of public speakers can inspire and make their voice heard.

According to Harrington and Cassidy (1999), “the function of speech communication is to

convey information about how one feels about the talker or about the talker’s attitude, for

example, facial expressions or gestures” (p.1). There are several types of speech in which one

can use when writing a speech, such as informative, persuasive, layout and demonstration

speech.

The first type of speech is informative speech. An informative speech is like teaching.

The purpose of an informative speech is to try to teach something to the audience. The success of

your speech depends on whether the audience learns what you wanted to teach them. You need

to tell the audience why the information is useful and valuable. You need to make sure that the

audience understands and remembers the essential information. Therefore, if a person was using

an informative speech to capture the public it must be specific and understandable, so that when

the audiences hear it they can easily pick up. For instance, a teacher teaching her students about

the importance of public speaking and how it is beneficial to them.

Another type is persuasive speech. With the persuasive speech it is self explanatory, this

contains information that will help people to make a decision and to convince people to think in

a different way or to change the way they do things. Hence, at the end of the speech the reader
should be able to change the views of others listen to either take their side. For example, a lawyer

who is trying to convince a jury that his client is innocent. It could be a product that the reader

wants the audience to buy. The reader would use certain words or facts and figures to convince

the audience.

With the layout speech, the individual is giving direction or explaining the location of a

place. A simple example is a police officer giving directions to a lost tourist but a layout speech

tells the audience where things are. It may also describe their size and shape. Gestures are very

important in a layout speech, so when the police officer or real estate agent is showing persons

whether direction or showing them a house or land they use up a lot of gestures.

Finally there is a demonstration. A demonstration speech is like an informative speech

because you have to teach the audience about something. However, in a demonstration speech

you will not just tell the audience about something, you will also tell them how to do something.

For example, a teacher is teaching her class how to make soap using the different chemicals.
The importance of good nutrition

Why is it important to have good nutrition? Do you ever think about why you eat? The

easy answers are because you are hungry, tired and your stomach is rumbling. Sometimes you

might also eat because you are bored, sad or happy, just because it's lunchtime, or because that

chocolate-covered donut looks so good.

Those are some of the emotional and physical reasons why you eat, but do you ever put

much thought into why your body needs food? Not just any food, by the way, but healthy, good-

for-you food? Why is good nutrition important?

Good Nutrition Provides Energy

The foods you eat provide the energy your body needs to function. Just like you need to

put fuel in your car or recharge your cell phone battery, your body needs to be fed energy-

providing foods every day. The main form of energy for your body is carbohydrates.

Your body has the easiest time digesting carbohydrates like sugar and starch. Carbohydrates are

broken down into individual glucose, fructose or galactose units. Glucose is your body’s favorite

form of energy. If you don’t get enough carbohydrates, your body can make glucose from

protein or fat and if you get too many carbohydrates, your body is very good at storing them as

fat.

Good Nutrition Provides Raw Materials

Protein in the foods you eat is broken down into individual amino acids. Your body uses

the amino acids to build and repair the various parts of your body. Your muscles contain lots of

protein, and you need to replenish that protein through your diet. Your body also needs protein

for components of your immune system, hormones, nervous system, and organs. Therefore, we

need to eat healthy and listen to our bodies.
