Introduction
Extended surfaces (fins) are widely used to increase heat transfer between a primary surface
and the surrounding fluid. Fins can be optimized using geometrical modifications for heat
transfer enhancement. Making perforations in fins is one of the most useful methods to
enhance the heat transfer rate. Introducing perforations to the fin body, the surface area and
heat dissipation rates are increased for a given range of perforation dimension and decreases
the expenditure of fin materials. Perforated fins have better contact surface and lower
pressure drag with the fluid when compared to the solid fins.
The present work reports on a computational study of steady state incompressible forced
convective heat transfer through solid and perforated pin arrays with variation in fin shape,
perforation geometry, number and size of perforations. Variation in fin arrangement, knurling
of fin surface and tapering of circular perforations are done to visualize the change in heat
transfer rate, pressure drop and system performance. Moreover, different perforated fins have
been optimized using multi objective optimization techniques like MOORA to predict
suitable fin structures for dissipation of maximum heat transfer against minimum pressure
loss. On the other hand, exergy analyses of different perforated fins have been carried out to
calculate exergy efficiencies of different perforated fins from which best fin configuration
can be predicted.
