The procedure of constructing geometric figures such as angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, parallel and
perpendicular lines, and many more using only a compass and a straightedge is called geometric construction.
Steps Bisecting Line Segments

1. Draw a segment and name it ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅.

A B

2. Adjust the compass so that its width is > 1 ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅. Place its tip
2
at point A and draw arcs above and below ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅.

3. Using the same compass setting, place the tip of the compass
at point B and draw arcs above and below ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅ that intersect
the two arcs previously drawn. Label the two points of
intersection as P & Q.

4. Use a straight edge to draw line ̅𝑃̅𝑄̅.

Label the point where it intersect ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅as M
M.
Point M is the midpoint of ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅ and ̅𝑃̅𝑄̅ is a bisector of ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅.
Also, ̅𝐴̅𝑀̅= ̅𝑀̅𝐵̅=1 ̅𝐴̅𝐵̅.
