Many of hem have nof found themszives inatstudant’ context for many years. Consistency of presentation provides them with a sense oj security. ‘Once they have understoad the\cirections in the first pages, litle menttal energy is vldsted trying to figure ‘out what is required of them to compiate the exercises in the following pages of Bapk |. This translates into’a double benefit. The student can focus more fully on learning the language contentbeing taught while: Sirhutaneously developing confidence as she/he experiences success and a feeling of being in contro! Each page of the workbgok contains some or all ofthe following features: i} The page number! logeted inthe top right hand comer has been’written in numerals as well as in the correspondingjaumber word. | i) Each page contains bne or more “Pars” with the iaading for each part Mdenttying the subject (or theme.6f the now vocabulary. ii) "REMEMBER" boxes are used o clatly 2 grammar paint or conjugate @ new verb. iv} Directives tor the stusent to follow are typed in bold vy) Structures are presented in a planned progression based on level of difficuity and functional usage. vi) Allmited number of v lems are introcueed on 2 page to prevent students from expetiencing information overoad vill) ictures in reduced form in the workbook are exact replicas of the pictures in the English For Lite Visuals. vill) Question-answer formal with the aid of a visualin the of workbookexercises encourages a.com: + municative approach, ix) Words introduced to the students for the frst time ara listed in alphabetical orc of the page, the botedim, Evaluacion y Calificacion Nombre Matricula Seecion, Carrera Sélo para uso del profesor Practica No. | Practica No. 2__ PracticaNo.3_ PraChGaGN cater sercttiseretiatercs Practica No. Bee eee Practica No. 6 Practica No. Practica No. 8 Practica No. 9. Practica No. 10 dialogue, bingo, puzzle and other word games, etc. should then be used to promote in the students the ‘aoquisition’ of the language. The goal should be to have the students produce the language as an automatic response to a stimulus. Note: You will notice that the content of English For Life is presented in a spiralling fashion. It is hoped that a few structures and some vocabulary items irom previous lessons willbe reviewed betore the presentation of new material each day..The review section of the lesson should include allof the structures, ‘and vocabulary that the student will encounter on the workbook page to be assigned that day. LISTENING TECHNIQUE ‘A good way to provide students with more practice and develop Istening skils isto do a listening exercise on a dalty basis. This is also @ good way 1o review the content convered on previous days. Example: Before presenting the lesson elated to the content covered on page 8, the teacher would hang out half scaps. The students would write down #1-10 on their papers. Students then listen to the question and write down the answer. Each question is repeated at least twice. ‘Sample questions might be as follows: 1) What is you first name? 2) What is your family name? 3) What is the name of you teacher? ‘Then pointing to the large visvais of the man, woman, boy and baby the teacher asks: 4) What is this? (man) 5) Is this a woman? (woman) 6) Is this a boy ori? (boy) 7) What is this? (baby) 8) Is your teacher a man or a woman? 9) Are you a man or a woman? 10) What day is t today? ‘The teacher then asks for volunteers to give the answer to #1. Another student could go and write the answer on the blackboard. The teacher would then draw from the stronger students the question she/ he had asked and gets the question on the blackboard. This procedure is used for all 10 questions. This kine of exercise is another opportunity for the student to transfer information from the short termto the long term memoty through repeated and recurring practice at diferent intervals of ime. also provides for active participation by all students in the class. Unimately the hope is that all students will experience success in their endeavour to learn Engl and consequently will enjoy the class. This book was designed with this goal in mind, ‘Good luck in achieving it! We wish to express our appreciation to Peter Baureiss for the illusirations and to Terry Beor for his assistance with the workbook. Copyright 1993 2nd Edition by Brenda Beer and Yvette Rampaul. These words are listed in alphabetical order with the page number on which thay first appear. Ifthe vocabulary items represented in a picture in the 'Visuals' package the picture number is also provided. ‘The structures presentedinthe picture workbook are listed sequentially atthe backin the orderthey appearin the workbook METHODOLOGY ah ‘The methodology proposed for using these materials includes the following steps: ) The teacher uses gestures to direct the students to listen i) Pointing to the large picture and/or pointing to the concrete object brought to the class, the teacher models the answer par of the structure using vocabulary being taught four or five 6 articulating clearly. e.g. “t's a telephone’. New vocabulary should be introduced with a previously taught structure and anew structure should be practiced with familiar vocabulary. jv) The structure andor new vocabulary is then printed on the blackboard. vi The teacher then models the question and points to the answer on the board. Once the teacher is assured that the students understand the answer, the teacher prints the question fon the board. vi) The teacher again gestures for the students to listen and models the question and answer a few times while pointing to the words on the blackboard, vil) Once the teacher is sure the students understand the question and answer, she/he asks the question and solicits the answer choral from the students three or four times, While the students answer chorally the teacher watches the students and listens for mispronuncia tions. Shehe then models the mispronouced words articulating clearly andstressing the cor- rect pronunciation. Correct intonation is also stressed and drawnto the students’attention. vii) any student is anxious to write down the question and answer in his/her exercise book, theteacherpauses and encourages athe students to record whatthey are about to practice. “The teacher circulates asssisting students and ensuring they are copying correctly. ix) Once the students have recorded the new tanguage (structure or vocabulary) in writing. the teacher directs the students to put down their pens and practice the new language pre- sented. x) Students should practice the question and answer chorally at least four or five times after they have written it down betore they are asked to respond individually xi) Stronger students should then be approached to ask the question while other students are called upon to answer indivigally. xi) No student should be put on the spot to answer or coerced 1o participate individually. Some students need more listening time before they are ready to produce the fanguage. “The teacher should have the students spell the new vocabulary items from the printing on the blackboard. xiv) Once the new structure and/or vocabulary has been practiced to the point of where most of the students can produce the quesiion and answer with the correct pronunciation, into- ration, and word order, the teacher directs the students to their workbook. yw) Thestudents workin their books while the teacher circulates and assists studonts ensuring that the correct punctuation and speling is used. vi) Students take turns reading the questions and providing the answer orally. Some students nay be called upon to go and write the answer on the board, Each student corrects his/her ‘own workbook. ‘The atmosphere t‘entraide’is promoted. Theteacher ensures that every students teels“in contro and confident shethe can lear English, even if this means that some students are referring to the » vocabulary and structures printed on the blackboard to do the exercises.
