SUBJECT: Why Odontology?

INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY

On August 31st, 2021, I had the opportunity to attend to a conference webinar called
“Why Odontology?” that was held by one of the directive members of the Puerto Rico Pre
dental Association (PRPDA). I am writing this report to share the knowledge that I acquired
during this webinar. This report includes the following sections: definition of odontology,
specialties in dental medicine, and conclusion.

DEFINITION OF ODONTOLOGY

Odontology is defined as the evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of

diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and/or adjacent and
associated structures and their impact on the human body; provided by a dentist, within the
scope of their education, training, and experience, in accordance with the ethics of the
profession and applicable law.

SPECIALTIES IN DENTAL MEDICINE

This webinar discussed some of the most important specialties in the field of dental
medicine in which are:

 Orthodontics: Area of dentistry in which specializes in the treatment of irregularities

in the teeth and jaws, including the use of braces.
 Maxillofacial Surgery: Area of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and auxiliary
surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, and trauma of the oral and maxillofacial area.
 Endodontics: Includes the diagnosis and treatment of the dental pulp and associated
conditions. (Root canals)
 Pediatric Dentistry: Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases in children,
or patients who has medical needs and special conditions.
 Prosthodontics: Area of dentistry in which it is focused on repairing the correct
functionality and aesthetic of the denture that has been altered by tooth loss.

CONCLUSION

I can say that I learned a lot in this webinar, specially that Dental Medicine is a very
broad and varied field. I also confirmed that this is what I want to do in my future. I have gain
so much knowledge about the profession, and I highly recommend other people to pursue this
career and enrich themselves with more information about the incredible studies and findings
that has been accomplished thanks to this field.
