Playing duets - often in an informal setting with a colleague, student or teacher - bridges the gap between the woodshed and the concert stage. Someone ‘once told me, "If you want to learn a lot, seek out a better trumpet player and play duets.” Over the years, I've learned a lot while having my hat handed to me by some of the greats. But it's a bvo-way street: I learn from my students and colleagues each time we sit down and Play together, Best ofall, playing duets rarely feels like education. How can something so ‘much fun be good for you? Writing these duets grew ow of my own teaching of these concerti. For example, the solo part from the Ist mvt, of the Haydn is particularly unsuccessful as a monologue and I found myself filling in the holes - first singing, then playing the orchestral passages along with my students. Its important to remember that these works are great pieces of art, not just some great licks for the trumpet. Shakespeare gives Hamlet some great solo lines, but also forces him to admit that "the play's the thing!" It's the dialogue that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. ‘So t00 with these concerti, the drama is found in the dialogue and interplay between the soloist and the orchestra. My goal in writing these duets was to maintain as much of this ‘musical value as possible. There's an old joke about the foolproof method for making. a sculpture of an elephant: Take a ‘chunk of marble and chip away everything that doesn't look like an elephant. Along those lines, Ihave wried to take these pieces and erase everything that didn't sound like a trumpet duet, It isin this spirit of both serious appreciation and good fun that I offer these duet arrangements of three classical trumpet concerti, two originally written for the trumpet and the other adopted by trumpeters as one of the family. Wherever you play them - practice room, studio class or on a boat in the middle of the lake I hope you will be reminded of why these pieces are 50 beloved by trumpeters and audiences alike. Acknowledgements I would like to thank Rob Roy McGregor, Jay Lichtmann and David Baldwin for their encouragement, advice and honest (if not downright brutal) editing, Without their help these duets would still be in a drawer. I would also like to thank the trumpeters toc numerous to name who have played parts of these duets in various stages of development and given their assistance and chops to this project. Finally, I want to thank my family, Shawnthea, Walt, Clara and Renny, who have gotten to know these pieces quite well, - Neil Mueller Tramp Concerta in C flat Major 7 ” Duct Version Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) 7.
