Due January 6

Date: November 4
The objective of my project is to monitor and record the effects of yoga on sleep patterns
aged 19-30 years old. I will be monitoring the progress through Fitbit and Apple watch. These
devices allow me to observe the number of times the subject has woken up and the time they
have slept in various stages. For instance, deep sleep, REM sleep, and light sleep show a
deeper level into the research, which can support the research I have found and my prior
knowledge. Subject #1’s average amount of sleep 5 days before the experiment was 7 hours
and 52 minutes, which is a decent amount of sleep. Subject #1 has an average of 0 times when
waking up in the middle of the night, but the experiment is meant to improve sleep quality.
Subject #2’s average amount of sleep the past 5 days was 8.5 hours and woke up an average
amount of 6 times in (some time) intervals. This can directly link to the slightly increased amount
of sleep.
The experiment will consist of a form of exercise (yoga) being done in the morning and
data being recorded consistently throughout the experiment. Research shows that increased
exercise in daily routines can decrease the risks of high blood pressure, fatigue, and
cardiopulmonary and nervous system fatalities. Because this experiment consists of different
ages and outside factors it may be hard to completely edge out the cause, but it should level out
the negative symptoms and the positive symptoms should surface. The experiment will start on
November 5 for all subjects and they must follow the rules and extensively fill out the table with
detail. The experiment will be active from November 5 - December 31. Throughout the
experiment, I expect to see results within two weeks of activity as it will start to boost mental and
physical strength.

Date: November 26
The subjects have now been doing the experiments for 20 days. It is almost halfway
through the experiment. The results have varied, but there has been a decrease in awake
occurrences for subject #2. Subject #1 has initially been waking up 6 times throughout the night,
but as the experiment goes on it is slowly decreasing. This is a positive impact of the
experiment as you use up more energy during the day, which allows you to fall asleep faster and
increase the quality of sleep. Because both subjects have many different other variables and
factors that could disrupt the process slightly the results will vary depending on them. For each
subject, they have multiple intense daily routines, with one with a full-time job plus intense
sports, and the other with a job that requires you to be on your feet at all times plus stress from
university, this can be a deciding factor towards the end of the experiment for the result of each
subject.
As the experiment goes on I predict that the answer to my research question is, does
yoga help you sleep better? more conclusive. The environment is also an important factor in this
experiment. The main factor I am measuring would be the number of awake occurrences as it
will tell me the most information in terms of progress and improvement. I am still concerned as
one subject may have skipped a few days, which could obscure the results.
