Project Reflection

Question: In what ways has the cookies project helped you gain perspective on doing real world
mathematics?

The cookies project was an insight into the mathematics behind running a business and making
recipes. This project also showed me how important and useful mathematics can be in helping a
business plan smartly and efficiently. When we first started the project, Ande gave us the unit
problem to try and solve. To say the least, the problem was quite confusing, and I made it overly
complicated while I tried to solve it. By the time class was over we had one answer, an answer
that took us all class to find. Then, it turned out that the answer we had found wasn't even the
best solution. By the end of class, my mind was completely boggled trying to figure out how a
person could efficiently and correctly solve this problem. I knew that people must have done
similar problems in real life to help them run their businesses, but how? By the end of the unit, I
could easily solve the unit problem that had given me so much trouble before. With the tools, we
were given during this project I could actually see how it was possible and actually easy to solve
this problem. Before it had seemed overly complicated, but after learning how to translate the
real-world constraints into inequalities that we could then graph in desmos, add a profit line and
easily find the best combination to gain the best profit. Using similar techniques would help
businesses a lot. This problem showed me how mathematics and algebra are a staple for
businesses that want to make a smart profit. It makes achieving the best profit much simpler,
and straightforward.
