“No one is born a violent extremist – they are made and fueled.

Disarming the process of radicalization

must begin with human rights and the rule of law, with dialogue across all boundary lines, by
empowering all young women and men, and by starting as early as possible, on the benches of schools.”

- UNESCO

Being a citizen of a country like India, where people from the most diverse of backgrounds in matters of
religion, language, caste and creed live together harmoniously, I can confidently say that I know how
important peace is. Extremism as a concept itself is dangerous, and coupled with violence it becomes an
evil that in a matter of time destroys everything in its surroundings. On the lines of what Mahatma
Gandhi perceived of non-violence, curbing the feelings of extremism among the general public is vital to
the development of a nation and its people and moreover, the world as a whole. Understanding that the
United Nations is an organization working on a global level to prevent such ideologies from building up,
as a student of law, I believe I can provide a legal outlook as well as a well-defined structure to the
activities that are to be carried out towards the accomplishment of these goals.

Adding to the same, it has been proven many times in the past that education and awareness can be
used as tools and as preventive measures to many central problems rooted in the society. As a learner
and thinker, I will offer my mind and time, as well as my interpersonal and communication skills to work
towards a more peaceful world.

Innocent people get killed every day for the views that they hold, there is a need to build up a tolerance
for individual opinions and to know that an issue becomes controversial only when we as a society,
deem it to be. The end goal set has to be idealistic in order to reach to a place close to an ideal society,
and so the emphasis on hearing out everyone's voice and to appreciate their endeavour to speak up
even if we don't concur with their views is something that needs to be communicated to people.

What motivates me is that our society is constantly evolving to be more inclusive of people, and the
goals that we've set over the years are gradually being met. I do not have an ounce of doubt that
whatever we work towards, we will achieve. What we can help with is the time consumed to do the
same globally, methods we can devise to speed up this process so we have time to address more
pertinent issues unique to certain countries.

Over the years I’ve realized that people perform their best when they are working towards something
that they feel about or have personally experienced at some point in their lives. As an individual, I will
bring in passion to the work that I do, the United Nations is an organization that I feel strongly about,
both morally and ideologically. I’m willing to put in all my skills and to learn more about the way the
world functions and what I can do to add to it.

Every individual has something to offer to the world, and most of the people don’t get an opportunity to
do the same. With this internship, I hope to receive a platform to voice out my opinions and to bring a
constructive change in the way the world functions. Such kind of experience early in my life will be
beneficial to the way I work later. I intend to keep applying to the UN at different stages in my life for
the purposes mentioned above and so I hope that my candidature for this internship is accepted.
