The Importance of Mental Health in our University Life

MEMORANDUM
DATE: September 30, 2021
TO: AMSA UPRP Chapter
FROM: Dr. Gerardo Medina
SUBJECT: Report on the importance of mental health in our university life

On September 30, 2021, I attended a conference through the Google Meet platform. The person
in charge of organizing the meeting was Dr. Gerardo Medina, who chose as a topic; "The
Importance of Mental Health in our University Life", to talk about. During the conference,
participants were able to talk about the strategies they have used during their college life to
maintain a healthy state of mind. The purpose of my attendance to this conference was to learn
about how to deal with my emotions, but more specifically, with the stress and anxiety that can
be present during the university’s academic year.

MEETING WITH DR. MEDINA

He began by defining what mental health is, which is to have social, emotional, psychological
well-being and thus be able to prevent different psychological disorders such as anxiety, stress,
and depression. This with the purpose of not affecting our development in college life so we can
meet our goals. On the other hand, some of the different recommendations Dr. Medina gave so
that these disorders do not affect our performance in university life where: have a routine, take
care of your habits, rest, do not procrastinate, be positive, make the most out of your day, use
breathing strategies and seek psychological help.

INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS

After the lecture, the students were able to turn on their microphones to share their techniques to
achieve a better mental health. The president of the association mentioned that it is very
important to have someone with whom to talk about the situation and not compare with others
because each one has different situations and processes. Other members of the association
mentioned that the stigma of going to the psychiatrist should be eliminated and, if it is necessary,
to consume pills, because it helps to regulate neurotransmitters.

CLOSING
“The Importance of Mental Health in our University” was very useful since everyone can apply
the strategies that were mentioned in life, due to all the stressors that surprise us. In my case, this
will help me a lot throughout my professional career, since I will be able to have a better
management of my emotions when going through a complex situation that requires a lot of
emotional control, such as working with patients, since I want to become a doctor. Lastly, not
leaving my health aside and giving it the priority, it deserves surely will help to overcome any
obstacle.
